Buy Domain Names – Tips On How And Why

Want to know what the steps are to buy domain names? Having your own domain name and your own website is by far the best way to start an online business. When you have a domain name and a website it’s like ‘owning’ your own piece of online real estate. It gives your business credibility and it allows you the control you need to run your business as you choose.

Many people, especially when first starting out, mistakenly think that they can put up a blog or website for free at places like WordPress.com or Blogger.com and that is the same as getting their own domain name.

Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. when you go the free route, you don’t own anything and you don’t control anything.

If the company who is hosting your blog decides that they are going to change some rule and then find that you aren’t in accordance with the new rule, they can just pull the plug on your blog. They don’t have to warn you, it’s theirs and they can do what they want.

It also presents a less than professional image to any visitors that may visit your free website. You want to create credibility and look professional. Neither of those things is achieved with a free site.

So, hopefully I’ve got you convinced that owning your own website is important, now I will walk you through the steps to buying your first domain name.

1. Figure out what your website will be about. Are you selling products or services related to birds, golf, online business, pets, etc.

2. Once you determine what niche your business will be in, you need to find a list of keywords related to that niche. A long list of highly targeted and highly searched keywords is what you are looking for.

3. Take your list of keywords to an online domain registrar, there are dozens. Plug in your keywords until you find one that is available.

For example, if you are building a business about bird watching and you’ve found that the keyword “bird watching for beginners” gets a lot of monthly searches, than you plug that in to see if the domain name “BirdWatchingForBeginners.com” is available. If so – great, if not – keep looking.

The more competitive the niche the more time it will take to find the right domain name since many of the keywords that you are using will already be taken.

If possible, use a .com extension but if you just can’t find a .com but you can find a .net, I would go for it. I’ve used both and have gotten great results with either. This is especially true if your domain name is a really great keyword.

Also, try to avoid using other words if possible. If the most searched for keyword on your list is “bird watching tips” it’s best to use only ‘BirdWatchingTips.com” but if that’s not available you can still get good results with “BestBirdWathcingTips.com”.

It’s not quite as good, but it’s better than using a less popular keyword for your domain name. As long as the keyword itself is intact, it won’t hurt you to add a word before or after your main keyword.

It’s easy to buy domain names, what becomes more of a challenge is to buy the right names, these tips will help you get a great name for your business.

Internet Entrepreneur : How To Buy Domains For An Income

When it comes to buying domains, everything starts with the purchasing phase-the construction of the initial portfolio. There are many different ways to do it. Below, we’ll consider four different ways:

1.Buy domains from the primary market in bulk. Many domain registrars will allow you to do this at a discount. You may be able to reduce the price by 30-40% by doing this. However, you may need to buy anywhere between 50 and 100 names.

2.Buy part of a portfolio from an existing domainer. In many cases, domainers will need to liquidate large parts of their portfolios in short periods of time, even if they are doing well. You should pay attention to these firesales, as domains are often sold in bulk below market price.

3.Buy domains after they “drop.” This generally occurs after a long-time owner of a site goes out of business or decides that it is no longer worth it to keep the site. When the business does not re-register, the domain will “drop” and become visible as an available domain.

4. Look for leads on domain name forums. On it is common to discuss domain name sales and purchasing strategies. Look for tips about big, new sales; and use them to start your portfolio.

In addition to these four strategies for starting your portfolio, there are dozens of others.

The Best Websites to Buy Domain Names

With over 1,000,000 subscribers and more than million in domain transactions each month, Sedo(dot)com is one of the best places to buy and sell domains.

As we discussed earlier, there are two types of markets for domains: primary markets and secondary markets. Primary markets consist of registrars that allow you to purchase a domain for the very first time. Secondary markets, on the other hand, consist primarily of site owners and speculators who are reselling domains that have already been registered and held; and are now being resold.

Sedo is perhaps the best known out of all of the major secondary markets for domains. In its current format, Sedo allows sellers to auction off domains to a thick market of buyers (with a reserve price if desired).

Sedo offers two options to sellers: they can either sell in the “great domains” section; or in the general marketplace. The “great domains” section is reserved for domains that have short, one-word domains with reasonable reserve prices and that fit a number of other important criteria. These auctions typically enjoy a lot of attention from buyers; and often sell at higher prices as a result.

If you are a relatively new buyer with a small portfolio or no portfolio at all, the best place to look at least initially is the marketplace. When you search in the marketplace, you will have the following ways to tune the following set of options:

1.Keyword. You can look specifically for sites that fit your target portfolio categories. For instance, if you used the 10 categories that we mentioned earlier in the book, then you could use this feature to see if any domains that were currently being auctioned were related to golf, yachts, restaurants, or any of the other categories.

2.Extension. If you are have a portfolio that is heavy in a particular type of generic top level domains, you may want to diversify out of it. You can use this feature to focus specifically on .com domains, generic top level domains, or country code domains.

3.Category. You can use this feature to think up and find new categories of domain that you can focus on in your portfolio.

4.Price. If you use the strategy outlined earlier, you should use this option to target domains that are in the 0-300 range. In particular, look for domains that have received a significant amount of bids, as this indicates that the market for that name is thick. To the contrary, avoid auctions that have only 1 or 2 bids, as it may be difficult to get to replicate the price that you pay in the future.

5.Listing Type. While most listings are auctions, you also have the option to look at “fixed price” and “offer/counteroffer” listings, too. Unless you feel very confident about the quality of the domain in question and its viability in future sales, I would avoid these categories and stick to auctions, since the auction itself gives you important information about the quality of the domain.

6.Length. You can use this option to narrow down domain listings according to the amount of characters they contain. Unless you have a good reason to focus only on short or larger domains, I personally suggest looking at all lengths. Even though shorter domains are often higher quality and receive more type-in traffic, longer domain names can sometimes offer a great bargain.

7.Exclude. You can use this feature to get rid of certain types of domains. If you need to narrow things down, I personally recommend getting rid of domains that contain hyphens, as these have fallen out of favor among domainers and site owners alike.

8.Domains/Websites. In addition to simply searching for domains, you can also look for existing websites. While the purchasing considerations here should be different, many of them are similar.

9.Visitors/Month. While many do not pay careful attention to this criterion when searching for secondary market domains, it is very important. Not only does a high volume of traffic increase the value of the domain, but it also makes it easier to generate revenue from “cash parking” the domain between the purchase and the resale (we’ll discuss this more later).

Using these nine different search criteria, you can work through the set of auctions to determine which sites will be the best additions to your portfolio.

The Difference Between Web Hosting and Domain Registration

The process of creating a website and getting it online can be a tricky one, especially for the non-technical community. And this surely isn’t helped by the common misconception that domain registration and web hosting is one and the same thing.

So let’s clear things up. Domain registration and web hosting are two separate processes, both of which need to be completed in order to create a website and make it live on the internet.

Put simply the process is as follows: a domain must be registered by a domain registration company and then that domain name must be hosted on the internet through a web hosting company.

And here’s where the confusion comes in. Many companies will offer both domain registration and web hosting, whereas others will only offer either web hosting or domain registration. Therefore you can choose to register your domain and host your website with the same company or register your domain with one company and host your site with another.

It really as simple as that, but is something that causes a great deal of confusion and unnecessary stress to many people wanting to set up a website.

Domain Registration
To use the Internet to communicate with others or to look up information, you have to type an address into your computer. These addresses are a name or a number and are more commonly known as domain names. Every domain name has to be completely unique so that the internet knows the correct website to bring up for the user.

If you wish to create your own website, you need to devise a name you wish your website to be known as. This name then needs to be registered with a domain registration company to ensure that it is unique and that you become the legal owner of that domain name.

You also need to pick a domain extension to attribute to your domain name. By this we mean.com,.co.uk,.org,.net etc. You should give careful consideration to the domain extension you choose to ensure that your full domain name best represents that of your business or project. For example if you are a UK business and are only selling to the UK, it would be most effective to choose a.co.uk domain extension – especially for achieving good UK search engine rankings.

It is imperative that before registering a domain name with a domain registrar that you check that they are a credible domain registration company. One method of doing this is to check that the domain registrar’s website is featured on the ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) Accredited Registrars list

Web hosting
Once you have registered your unique domain name with an accredited domain registrar, you need to get your website live on the internet. To do this, you need to buy a web hosting package from a hosting company.

The process of putting your website on the internet is completed by the web hosting company you sign up with and will involve placing your website on a web server which is then linked to the internet. The type of web server your site is hosted on will depend on the requirements of your website. The most common web hosting plans are Shared Web Hosting and Dedicated Server Web Hosting.

Shared Web Hosting
If you have a simple website which requires a regular amount of web space and bandwidth, then it is likely that your hosting company recommend you choose a shared web hosting plan.

With this plan your website will be placed on one of the web hosting company’s shared web servers. Here your website will reside alongside a number of other similar sized websites where it will share all the server’s resources and features.

Each hosting company differs in the hosting features they offer with their shared hosting plans. With many companies you will receive as standard:

o A specified amount of web space depending on your chosen package
o Easy to use web site control panel
o Online account management facility
o Full 24/7 ftp access to upload your web files
o Free domain transfer
o Unlimited domain aliases
o Webmail
o Send and receive emails using Microsoft Outlook or other email programs

Dedicated Server Web Hosting
If your website has grown to a size which cannot be accommodated on a shared server or if you require the flexibility to add software or other features to your site, then your web hosting company may recommend that you purchase a dedicated server.

With a dedicated server, you own the rights to the whole server; thus giving you complete control over what is installed and run on your server. Space and bandwidth usage will also no longer be a problem as there will only be your site (or sites) using the servers resources.

With a dedicated server you also have peace of mind that your site(s) won’t be at the mercy of other websites and their potentially corrupt code – which could cause downtime and other problems to your site.

When choosing a dedicated server you can opt to have your server managed or unmanaged by the web hosting company. With a managed server, you may receive services such as site administration, certain software installation, maintenance and upgrades. The major plus of having your dedicated server managed is that you have an expert on hand should your server suffer any failure – guaranteeing your site a high uptime percentage. Although significantly cheaper, unmanaged server hosting is only really recommended for those with a high degree of technical knowledge in server administration and management.

Look out for Ideal Domain Names and Linux & Windows Server Hosting Packages

Once a domain name is registered, it is hosted in the web. Not only website, but also, files and other information are supposed to be stored in the World Wide Web platform. Domain name web hosting including Linux server hosting and Windows server hosting show the prevalent issues of the web usages at a massive scale.

For the wider use of info in the web for the corporate sectors and personal sites or blogs for families or hobbies, the web hosting is termed essential with proper space and similar other feasibilities.

Therefore finding best web hosting package is a crucial task.

Cheap Domain Name Hosting

There are several cheap domain name hosting services available in the market. Those hosting packages offer all the benefits of not having those annoying ads and quite possibly, more disk space and greater monthly bandwidth. Price conscious people can even find those sites cheaper than a large pizza they spend so many times. It is, hence, very much ethical and practical to spend that much sum in order to get quality services and features. Especially the perfectionists are well aware of these paid and cheap domain name web hosting packages.

Shared Domain Name Hosting

Shared domain name hosting is what most of the website customers end up choosing at their initial stages. In this kind of set up the web hosting company, divides the master space on one of their servers and so many clients can access to share the space. The customers can shorten their costs among the shared servers and at the same time, can get all kinds of benefits at monthly payments. The pitfalls in case of the shared hosting is that if one of the sites has any problem gets hacked or takes up too many system resources -memory, CPU time, etc-then your site can be impacted as well.

Dedicated Domain Name Web Hosting

You can put a stop to your server being shared by so many inhabitants sharing your space, bandwidth or system resources and thereby the chances of being hacked can be resolved, if you opt for the dedicated server domain hosting. Two drawbacks are there: the significant high charge for booking the server and your sole control to mange your server, i.e. you cannot call and point a finger to anybody if anything goes wrong.

Free Domain Name Web Hosting

The most popular free hosting option is, you can create a single web page and you can save enough disk space on the server to store that web page and the associated files. You would also be given a certain amount of bandwidth, a measure of the amount of traffic the web site can handle. Talking about the cost issues, most of these websites usually come free of costs as part of the advertising from the web hosting company. For this you have compromise with several pop ups. If you think that this kind of free hosting option is suitable for your current situation and the intended look for the site, then you can easily opt for this.

Decision Making Process

Other than what type of the hosting services, one must be careful about what exactly is included in the price for the hosting services.

Disk Space & Bandwidth: Normally 500MB of disk space and 1GB of bandwidth will be enough for most websites. If the number is a little off from this stated figure, just do not worry. If, however, there be an abrupt low amount of disk space or bandwidth, please take away your website from one host to another, as they are really giving poor features.

Number of Email Addresses Set Up: Generally, you will be able to set up thousands, if not an unlimited amount of email addresses.
